The Civil Society Twenty (C20) has presented its policy recommendations to President Cyril Ramaphosa ahead of this month’s G20 Leaders Summit. The proposals, developed by 3 000 civil society groups worldwide, urge global action on inequality, debt and climate justice. But with the G20 presidency returning to the global north next year, there are concerns about whether these priorities from the global south will remain a focus. President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa has used its presidency to place the priorities of Africa and the Global South firmly at the heart of the G20 agenda. He officially closed the G20 Summit in Nasrec, South of Johannesburg, on Sunday. The historic gathering has pledged to extend support to low and middle-income countries as they face debt challenges.
Now that the G20 Leaders’ Summit is done and dusted, we go back to the community of Alexandra, north of Johannesburg to find out whether their expectations were met. In the build up to the summit, a group calling themselves Alexandra Peace Ambassadors, together with organizations of civil society, came together to discuss issues they wanted highlighted at the summit. Deputy President Paul Mashatile officially kicked of the G20 Social Summit, the flagship platform for integrating civil society voices into the G20 decision-making process, ealier on Tuesday. It seeks to foster global solidarity, advance inclusive development, and deliver a Declaration that reflects the aspirations and lived realities of citizens, especially the most vulnerable. As South Africa prepares to take centre stage during the G20 engagements, the country’s persistently high unemployment rate and sluggish job creation remain top priorities for civil society. The Institute for Economic Justice has joined national stakeholders for a focused dialogue on the G20 Platform can be leveraged to drive inclusive growth , expand employment opportunities and strengthen the labour market policy. Across Africa, conversations about democracy, justice, and reparations are taking centre stage. Right now in Midrand, the Third Civil Society Parliamentary Dialogue is underway, bringing together leaders, lawmakers, and civil society groups to strengthen democracy, peacebuilding, and accountability across the continent. With 2025 declared the Year of Reparations by the African Union, this dialogue seeks to turn reflection into action from justice for Africans and people of African descent, to stronger citizen engagement. Civil society movements have called for the cancellation of debt of developing countries. The declaration comes as world leaders are expected to gather in the country next weekend for the G20 Summit. Non governmental organisations – under the banner of Civil 20 – held a three day summit in Benoni, Ekurhuleni to discuss ways in which marginalised groups could be included in decision-making processes and benefit from the gathering of countries.

The Civil 20 group is hosting its summit in Benoni, in the Ekurhuleni Metro, with the aim of elevating the voices of women, persons with disabilities and the LGBTQI plus community.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has described the G20 Social Summit as the most histotoric milestone for glovbal cooperation. He was speaking at the end of the three day civil society gathering in Boksburg east of Johannesburg. The meeting brought together almost 5 000 delegates comprising of youth, women, people with disability, acdemia, and members of the LGBTIQ among others from accross the world. Although the Social Summit with civil society representation started in Brazil, South Africa expanded it from 14 social groups to 22. Here’s Chairperson of Civil 20, Thulani Tshefuta.
The C20 International Advisory Committee (IAC) met today, virtually to take stock of the work of C20. The meeting reflected on the process of handover from the South African government to the government of the United States of America. Processes that relates to governments in terms of the G20 are in the realm of governments and the C20 is ceased with matters of civil society and the focus of C20 is in this area of its focus.

The deepening social challenges of unemployment, inequality, crime and GBV cost South Africa billions annually, which directly impacts the country’s GDP and economic growth prospects. Activists have pinned their hopes on the upcoming G20 Summit’s C20 platform that will focus on Civil Society inputs, in a bid to help find long lasting solutions to the scourge of social ills like GBVF in the country. The C20 South Africa leadership, is expected to brief the media tomorrow, on their state of readiness to deliver the C20 Policy Pack at the G20 Summit in November later this year.
